1. i =1944
2.(1) i^w = 100 : This would give you the desire articles because it gives hits that contains ice age AND global  warming        (both).
   (2) i v w = 12,071 : This will not give you the desire articles because it gives hits that contains ice age OR global      warming (either or).
  (3) i={ 1, 3 }; w= { 2, 3}
        i ^ w= {1,3} ^ { 2, 3 }= { 3 }

Assignment #1

  1. I used Academic Search Premier as my database and the “I” query resulted in 1950 hits on January 11, 2007

      2.  1. The search conducted for i /\ w resulted in 102 hits on January 11, 2007.  This          search (i /\ w) would result in the desired articles for the research paper because it since ice age and global warming are both related to your topic of research, using “and” allows us to narrow down our hits to those that contain both ice and global           warming, not one or the other.

            2.  The search conducted for i \/ w resulted in 12,126 hits on January 11, 2007.

            3.  Region 1 contains all results done for ice age (i).  Region 2 contains all results            for gobal warming (w).  Regions 1 and 2 includes results for ice age or global warming.  Region 3 contains results for “ice age” and “global             warming” (i /\ w).  Region 4 contains results that have nothing to do with the       search.

  1. 1. The search conducted for i /\ ~w would be the appropriate query to use if you are searching for ice ice and not global warming because it will produce results that include “ice age” but not global warming.

      2. The search i \/ ~w would not be used because it would produce results that   contained ice age or anything that would not include global warming, which may          produce results that also do not contain “ice age.”

      3.  Region 1 includes all results for ice age (i).  Region 2 contains all results for not global warming (~w).  Regions 1 and 2 contain results for ice and or not global warming.  Region 3 contains all results for ice age and not global warming (i /\ ~w).  Region 4 contains results that have nothing to do with this search.

  1. 1.  The search (i /\ ~w /\ ~r /\ ~s) produces a total of 1818 query results.  It       produces less results than just searching (i) because it results in all searches that           contain “ice age” but excludes those that contain greenhouse effects, greenhouse       gases, or greenhouse effects.

      2.The previous statement under DeMorgan’s Law is written as ~(~i \/ w \/ r \/ s)

3.1.  r /\ ~s   2.  s /\ ~r  3.  a.  r /\ ~s: Region 1 includes all results for greenhouse           effects (r).  Region 2 contains all results for not greenhouse gases (~s).  Region 1             and 2 contain results for greenhouse effects or not greenhouse gases.  Region 3           contains all results for greenhouse effects and not greenhouse gases (r /\ ~s).        Region 4 contains results that have nothing to do with this search.

S /\ ~r: Region 1 includes all results for greenhouse gases (s).  Region 2 contains            all results for not greenhouse effects (~r).  Region 1 and 2 contain results for        greenhouse gases or not greenhouse effects.  Region 3 contains all results for   greenhouse gases and not greenhouse effects (s /\ ~r).  Region 4 contains results            that have nothing to do with this search.

      4.  As compared to the previous part, I would expect (r \/ s) to produce more   search results because it includes results for both greenhouse effects and        greenhouse gases without preventing results that include the other in the search.

  1. 1. The search for greenhouse and effect (g /\ e) produced 5267 results 2.  The search greenhouse effect (r) produced 2473 results.  One example that would be a result in the first search and not the second would be an article to the Effect of temperature increase under low radiation conditions on phytochemicals and ascorbic acid in greenhouse grown broccoli.

  1. 1.  A search for (g /\ e) \/ (g /\ a) produces 8635 results.  Under the distributive             property, the following is produced:  g /\ (e \/ a)  This search produces 8635        results as well.

Assignment #2Topic 3. Eating disorders affect women but they also affect men. You need to find some articles that discuss just the articles about men.

  1. The database used was Academic Search Premier.
  2. “eating disorder” and “men” not “women”
  3. eating disorder = e, men = m, women = w         (e /\ m /\ ~w)
  4. This query produced 106 search results.

I was assigned question 3: Eating disorders affect women but they also affect men. You need to find some articles that discuss just the articles about men.

a) I used info-track for my search

b) My search included eating disorders (d), men (m) and not women (w).
c) Logically the search would look like:

                   e /\ (m /\ ~ w)
d) The final search on info-track included 182 hits.

1. “Ice Age”- 5,040,000 hits

2. a.”Ice Age” ^ “Global Warming” - 879,000 hits

       b. “Ice Age” V “Global Warming”- 879,00 hits

       c. i^w is ( 3 )

           i V w is ( 1,2 )

3. i ^ -w  b/c you dont want any information on what area “4″ has.

              3b. i ^ -w —–(region 1 )

                     i V -w——( region 1,4 )

4. I recieved fewer hits because the search is more specific.

          1. Demorgans:   ( -i V w V r V s)

          2. r ^ -s

              s ^ -r

       3.   r ^ -s—- (1)

             s ^ -r —- (2)

        4.  r V s—-expect more articles

5. No they are not the same

         g ^ e —-5262 hits

         r ———2469 hits

        - They are different because there are more options with 2 things rather than 1.

          –An example would be : 1.  g ^ a

                                                      2.    s

6.  The Distributive formula:  g ^ ( g V a)8626 hits.

1) I used Academic Search Premier to search for “ice age” and recieved 1949 hits

2) a: Searched for ice age and global warming, (i^w)= 101 hits

b: Searched for ice age or global warming, (i v w)=12,112 hits

    c) i^w would be represented by Region 3, i v w would be represented by Region 1 and 2

3) a: i^~w is represented by regions 1,4, 1 v ~w is represented by regions 1,3,4

4) a: Fewer hits because the more u specify your search the narrower the hits.

    b: i^~w^~r^~s= ~(~i v w v r v s)

    c #1: r^~s= Region 1

       #2: s^~r=Region 3

d: r v s would produce more articles because you are given two subjects that are not combined.

5) g^e recieved 12,371 hits

     r recieved 2469 hits

The numbers of hits are not the same

6) (g ^e) v (g^a)= 8626 hits

      Distributive Law : g^(e v a)=8626 hits

#2.)database used : Academic Search Premeire

Exactly what was typed: (energy policy) and (fossil fuels) and (foreign oil)

logic form: e/\f/\o or (e/\ f) /\ ( e/\o)

number of hits= 2

#1.) data base used: Academic Search Premeire

exaclty what was typed “same sex marriage laws”, not Canada

logic form: s/\ ~c

number of hits= 11

Questions:

1.) for i the number of hits was 1949 on 1/10/07

2.) a.- i /\w = 101 hits.  This happened because when you use “and” you broaden your search, resulting in more options to choose from.     b.- i \/w = 12, 112 his.  This narrowed down the search because “ice age” and “global warming” had to be in either/or and NOT both. Therefore there are less articles.

    c.- i /\ w= region 3 and i \/ w= regions 1, 2 & 3.

3.) a-i/\~w= region #1

     b. i \/~w= regions #1&4

you would use the expression i /\~w because you do NOT want the info. that would be in 4  because they would not consist of information on the ice age.

    c. 1= i, ice age. 3=/\, and. 2=global warming, w. 4= info. not pertaining to either ice age or global warming.

4.  a-when you type in ice age, and not global warming, and not greenhouse effect, and not greenhouse gases…you recieve an error because you should not put “and” and “not” together.

     b- using DeMorgans Law the above sentence would be (~i \/w) \/ (~r /\~s)

     c- greenhouse effect but not greenhouse gases = (r/\ ~s) = 2072 hits.

     d- greenhouse gases but not greenhouse effect = (s /\~r) = 3808 hits.

     e- (r/\ ~ s) = region 1  and (s/\~ r)= region 2 (because 3 has BOTH)

f- greenhouse effects or greenhouse gases gives you more because “or” broadens your search and more articles are found.

5.  No, the number of hits is not the same.

g /\ e = 5262 hits.

r = 2469 hits.

These numbers are differnt because the first one is looking for either/ or and second one is looking for both together.

ex: 1.) g /\a

       2.) s

6. (g/\e) \/ (g/\a) in the distributive form is g /\ (g\/ a) which gives you 8626 hits.

Question #6: The minium wage is low. Some say it should be raised. Others say it hurts small business. Still others say it will cause more outsourcing of jobs. What can you find on this topic?

a) I used Infotrac for my search

b) I searched (Mimium wage and small business) or outsourcing of jobs!

c)The Logic Query is written as (W^B) v J!

D) The total # of hits I obtained for the query were 210

Assignment #21.a. Infotrac

b. (same sex marriage laws) not (canada)

c. s /\ ~c

d. 11

2.

a. infotrac

b. (energy policy) and (fossil fuels) and (foreign oil) or (energy policy) and (fossil fuels) and (energy policy) and (foreign oil)

c. e /\ ( f /\ o) or (e /\ f) /\ (e /\ o)

d. 2

Assignment #1Question #1

1. i- 1949Question #2

1. i. /\ w - 1012. i. v w- 12,112

3. i. /\ w- region 3 i. v w- regions 1, 2, and 3Question #3

1.You would use 1. i. /\ ~ wThe reason for this is because you want to narrow your search and by using the and sign you are able to do that. And is the word use to find articles which contain ice age only and or is the word used to find articles which will find ice age.2. i v ~ w would give you articles pertaining to ice age but also articles that do not belong to global warming but which pertain to other things as well.

3. i /\ ~w- region 1

i v ~w- regions 1, and 4

Question #4

1. 1818- You would receive fewer hits for this search as compared to the previous part because there are no articles pertaining to global warming, greenhouse effects, and greenhouse gases included in the search.2. [(~ i v w) /\ (~r /\ ~s)3. a. r /\ s~s - 2072

b. s /\ ~r - 3808

c. r /\ ~s - region 1

s /\ ~r - region 2

4. r v s would produce more articles because by using or, you are including articles which pertain to both greenhouse effect or greenhouse gases not for articles which pertain to greenhouse effect and greenhouse gases.

Question #51. g /\ e - 5262 - either greenhouse or effect2. r- 2469- greenhouse effect (words linked together)

An example of this is :

1. g /\ a

2. s

Question #61. Distributive law- g /\ ( g v a) - 8626 hits
